Sock Darning

I’ve never darned a sock. I’ve never worn a darned sock. Even at the poorest moments in my life I chose to either wear socks with a hole or find the cheapest pair of new socks I could. Until Kate came along.

Kate loves to sew, knit, weave, and crochet, and she loves to take care of her dad. When I took my shoe off yesterday and realized there was a hole, she went right to work. Since the hole was big enough that traditional methods of darning wouldn’t work, she found a scrap from her enormous pile of scraps and sewed it on over the hole.

So now if you see me walking with a little more pep in my step, you can be sure I’m wearing this pair of socks. I love that girl.

Happy Father’s Day!

I had a great father’s day. I got cards from the kids and Keri, some iTunes gift certificates, and a couple home-made coupon books. The coupon books included everything from foot rubs to days of not having to take the dog out (it’s the little things in life). It was also special because I got to talk to my father, a man that has had a tremendous impact on my life.

My father was not the kind of man who made speeches about how to live. He said what needed to be said but chose to give his speeches with his life. He didn’t talk about forgiveness, he practiced it. He didn’t talk about hard work, he worked hard and gave me opportunities to work hard as well. Many nights I heard him in his bedroom praying, and I learned how to pray. I can’t help but think about the song Devin Webb sang on Sunday morning, “I want to be just like you, because he wants to be like me.”

What will Jake be writing about me years from now? I pray that he also will enjoy the benefit of a dad who spoke not only with words, but with his life. Happy Father’s Day!
